Put a Mac-like Dock on your Windows Computer! [windows xp, vista]
Jealous of your friend’s mac because of the beautiful dock-thing at the bottom of their screen that they keep bragging about? Well, if you are, or if you’re just curious, I’m going to detail three ways to install a mac-like dock on your Windows XP or Vista Computer.
First Choice: RocketDock
RocketDock is a popular dock for Windows that has been around for a while now. Minimized windows can appear on the dock and many people love the clean interface and draggability. It runs great on slower computers, it supports skinning, and it supports multi-monitor setups. There are also nice effects like smooth icon transitions and real-time previews.
1) Go [here] to download RocketDock. Install it and a dock should appear on the bottom of your screen. Drag any applications you want to it.
2) Assuming you want the dock on the bottom and the taskbar (start button) is on the bottom, you’ll need to move the taskbar to the top by right-clicking it and selecting “Unlock the taskbar”.
You did it!
Second choice: ObjectDock
ObjectDock is another dock that’s been around for a long time. It also supports skins and it has effects like zooming icons, swinging icons, and docklets.
1) Go [here] and download the latest version of ObjectDock.
2) Install the ObjectDock executable.
3) Open the new shortcut on your desktop to open ObjectDock’s settings. The most important settings are the attention effect (when an application needs your attention by bouncing, etc.), the appearance, and the dock’s icons (to remove an icon just right-click it and select “Remove Entry”. After you set your appearance, go to the themes tab and select “Save Theme”
You’re done!
Third choice: XWindows Dock (XWD)
XWD is a new dock that features appealing icons, skins, and eye candy.
From the website:
- Opacity and blur of reflections.
- Panel opacity, hiding and showind time
- Space between panel and screen border.
- Mac-like Stacks
Are some eye candies XWD has.
To install:
1) Download it [here]. Install it regularly. Setup should be fairly simple.
You’re done!
I hope you try all of these amazing apps and see which one’s best. Post what you like best in the comments!
Move the Dock around [mac]
An easy way to move the dock on the mac is to hold down shift while pressing the applications-files divider near the right side. After you do this, you just move the cursor any side to move it to that side!
